July 3rd, 2017 was going on like a normal lazy Yangshuo day. We were hanging out at The DMZ Bar when word came that Yangshuo would “probably flood”. Whilst this would cause alarm to most civilians, to us seasoned expats floods are a yearly occurrence, with places like the underground 99 supermarket spending half the year flooded, and half the year being repaired. Flood waters got to a manageable level, but rarely any higher for the majority of businesses on West Street, or Gui Hua Road.
This year’s Yangshuo floods were to be different.
At around 3.30 pm the “breach” started to happen and the government warnings to pretty much evacuate started (we kept The DMZ Bar open until 4 pm). Most people pretty much abandoned ship, grabbed supplies and headed home to ride it out.For me personally, this meant being flooded into my 3rd-floor apartment, which from 6 pm also had no power, nor 3G. For all the immeasurable suffering a whole night in Yangshuo without internet has to be right up there. Then we waited….
By afternoon it had cleared up enough to go and see what the flood damage to the town had been like, with over 70 percent of businesses affected, and more importantly to us, see what the damage to The DMZ Bar had been like. With the result being a fair bit worse than we’d hoped or expected.
Water had hit head height, and we’d lost fridges, computers and even our beloved table football (the national sport of Yangshuo Expats). Financially we’d lost a lot too, but you can’t keep a Young Pioneer down, so we set to three days of heavy duty cleaning. Within 4 days we had electric and within 2 weeks we’d finally replaced everything we had lost. In fact, we’d had it a lot better than other local favourites like Ganga, or The Brew and now as hot August Yangshuo is starting to hit the summer season with some normality, and we get to say we survived the Great Yangshuo Flood of 2017!
“We survived the Great Yangshuo Flood of 2017!”
